September begins with the Labour Day holiday, the traditional end of the summer vacation season. Summer typically brings drought, both meteor logically, and for holidays. As we enter September, the holiday drought is over. From here through to Christmas, the holidays and special days become bigger and more frequent but let’s get started with just Septembers…

Grandparent’s Day –

It is only right and fitting that one day of the year is set aside to honor our grandparents. It is time to celebrate those special people who are always there with a hug, a kiss, a cookie, something special, or take us somewhere.
National Grandparent’s Day originated in 1978. Then President Jimmy Carter declared it to be the first Sunday after Labor Day.
If you can, enjoy the day with them. That is the greatest gift they can receive from you. If you can’t see them, call them, or skype. When you call, make sure you have the time for a long conversation. Remember, grandparents will always ask about you first and listen intently to everything you have to say. They are never rushed or in a hurry. They are there just for you.
National Pet Memorial Day -second Sunday in September

People love their pets. We quickly grow attached to our pets. National Pet Memorial Day is an opportunity to bring closure to the departure of our beloved pets. It allows us to fondly remember our departed pet(s).
There are all kinds of pets. Sure dogs and cats are by far the most popular. But, pets also include rabbits, fish, turtles, ferrets, crabs, snakes, hamsters, gerbils, and a huge assortment of other animals.
Your pet would want you to cherish their memory, then move on. Use this special day for this purpose.
Ways to commemorate National Pet Memorial Day:
- Spend a few minutes reflecting upon pleasant memories of your pet
- If you buried your pet somewhere, go for a visit
- Contribute to an animal protection group
- Volunteer at an animal protection group
- Create a small memorial in a flower garden in your yard
- Plant a tree or a shrub as a living memorial

Teddy Bear Day

Today is Teddy Bear Day. A Teddy Bear is a special friend to children all over the world. He’s cuddly. He makes you feel secure in an otherwise insecure world. He’s lovable. Your Teddy Bear is both a companion and a comforter. And, he’s not afraid of the dark. He’ll keep you safe.
Spend the day and night with your teddy bear . Cuddle up to him. Talk to him. And, do all of your favorite things together.
Parents and adults: No child should grow up without a teddy bear. If you know of any kid without one, use this day to buy a teddy bear for them.
As we become adults, some find it difficult to give up our teddy bears. We feel there is no reason to give him up. Some adults have their teddy bears around all their lives. Its perfectly normal….and okay.

Video Games Day celebrates popular video games that stormed onto the market, and changed the way your kids play games. From Atari to Nintendo to Xbox, video games provide all too many hours of playing time on your television set.
In grandma and grandpa’s day, they had stick horses for toys and playtime. Today’s kids (big kids and little kids) have an enormous array of video games to play. Before you get tired of one game, another one hits the market.
Our extensive research into this special day discovered two separately distinct dates. Also, both dates for this special day refer to it as Video Games Day and National Video Games Day. Based upon our research results, we give the edge to September 12th as National Video Games Day. Lucky gamer that you are, you get to celebrate two video games days.
Celebrate National Video Games Day by playing video games. If you are off from school (or if you are a big kid off from work), make this a marathon day for video games. Better still, invite a few friends and hold a competition. Just make certain that you have enough controllers.

The Chinese Moon Festival is one of the biggest annual holidays in China. It is also called the Mooncake Festival or Lantern Festival.
Chinese Moon Festival, or the Mooncake Festival, is a celebration of the Autumn harvest. It occurs when the moon is the brightest. and the highest in the sky. This celebration is one of the oldest holidays in the world, dating back thousands of years. Early celebrations included worship of the moon as a god.
Today, the Chinese Moon Festival is celebrated as a national holiday in China and other Asian countries. People take the day off from work. They view the moon They cook and enjoy family and friends.
Making, giving, and eating mooncakes is an tradition on this day. Mooncakes pastries are thick and dense. They can be filled with a variety of things. Mooncake fillings are not usually sweets. It is often filled with beans, nuts, or seeds. Recipes vary.

Friday the 13th

Are you superstitious? Then, Friday the 13th is a day you may look forward to with fear! Friday the 13th, is an unlucky day, a day when bad things can happen. Whatever you do, don’t walk under a ladder, and don’t let a black cat cross your path on this day.
Throughout most of recorded history, the number 13 has been seen as an unlucky number. If you live in fear of the number 13, you suffer from Triskaidekaphobia. More phobias of interest.
Historically, and perhaps a bit oddly in today’s world, Friday has been viewed as an unlucky day of the week. We find this hard to fathom. After all, Friday is TGIF!! However, in days gone by, when you put the unlucky day of Friday, together with the unlucky #13, many people believe only bad things can happen.
Interestingly, there is a sizable number of optimists, who embrace Friday the 13th and the number 13. They shrug off the superstition and go buy lottery tickets with the number 13 in it.
For many who never gave it a thought, Jason in the movie “Friday, the 13th” (1980) made believers in the fearfulness of this day.

Origin of Friday the 13th:
In biblical references, it is believed that Cain killed Abel on Friday the 13th. We are not sure how this was determined, as calendars were unlikely to have been in existence back then.
We do know with certainty, the ancient Babylonian Code of Hammurah omitted the #13 in it’s list of laws. Written in 1,700 B.C., it suggests ancient Babylonians considered the #13 to be unlucky.

National Cream Filled Donut Day is a sugary, sweet day. Dontcha just love special days like today!? Sure, you were watching your weight. Then, along comes a special day that is just packed with calorie and carbs. And, that special day encourages you to eat one of your favorite breakfast treats…. cream filled donuts.
There is not shortage of food related “special days”. We are certainly glad that someone chose to create a day just for cream filled donuts. It truly is a special treat.
The most popular cream filled donuts are chocolate cream and vanilla cream. This author’s favorite is banana cream. But, they are hard to find. Whatever flavor is your favorite, just make sure the day does not go by, without having one or more cream filled donuts.

Wife Appreciation Day – third Sunday in September

The objective of this special day, is for wives without children to receive appreciation from their husbands. Mother’s Day is for wives with children. So, today is an opportunity for husbands in a childless marriage, to recognize the value of their wife. Let her know how important she is to you, and how much she is appreciated. It is a day that she truly deserves.
It should be very easy to show appreciation to your wife, for who she is, and for all the great things she does for you. You know her well, her likes and dislikes. Begin the day by telling her that she is appreciated. Give her a few examples why. Then, select a couple of things she likes or likes to do, and make it happen. Giving her a gift is perfectly okay, but in is not a requirement.
While this day was originally intended to honor wives in a childless marriage, we encourage all husbands to show appreciation for their wives on this day. Showing your appreciation today, is a basic ingredient for a long ad happy marriage.

National Cheeseburger Day

National Cheeseburger Day is today. Top off America’s favorite sandwich, with a piece of cheese.
The food industry makes it a point to celebrate a wide variety of foods. We believe the Cheeseburger certainly earns a special day.
Celebrate National Cheeseburger Day by firing up the grill, and cooking cheeseburgers. You can do so for lunch or dinner…. or both! Any kind of cheese will do. Try a different cheese, if your adventuresome. For the carb conscious, eat your burgers without the buns.
Watch for……. luncheon and dinner specials today at your local restaurants. Tops on the specials board certainly should be cheeseburgers!

International Peace Day

International Peace Day seeks a global cessation of violence and war. Each year on this day, celebrations are held in hundreds of countries, all with the same goal in mind….to stop war and violence. Created and sponsored by the United Nations, this day seeks to end war, starting today.
The United Nations goal for this day is “a day of non-violence and cease fire”. Wouldn’t it be nice if this one day succeeded and spread, country by country, day by day, until there is no more war or violence. Can this goal ever succeed? Former Beatle John Lennon had the right vision in his song “Imagine“.
Origin of International Peace Day:
International Peace Day was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 (resolution 36/67). It was first held on the third Tuesday of September, starting in 1982. Beginning in 2002, the UN General Assembly changed the date, setting September 21st as the date for yearly celebration.

Business Women’s Day recognizes the value and contribution of women in the business world.
The roots of this special day go back to the late 1940s. While men were off fighting World War II, women filled the void in the workforce. The returning soldiers found the women eager to have their men return. But, many women were not anxious to return to traditional roles in the home. Since this time, women’s role and contributions in the workforce have grown and evolved.

Origin of Business Women’s Day:
Hilary A. Bufton Jr. and three Kansas City business women founded the American Business Women’s Association(ABWA) on September 22, 1949. The first Business Women’s Day was celebrated in 1982.
In 1983 a joint Congressional resolution was passed, and signed by President Ronald Reagan proclaiming September 22 as Business Women’s Day. President Ronald Reagan also issued Proclamation 5532 on American Business Women’s Day, in 1986.

National Good Neighbor Day – Always September 28, previously the 4th Sunday in month

Ah, Good Neighbor Day. It’s definitely a good thing. Being good neighbors is an important part of the social fiber that makes this country so great. Therefore, it seems only fitting that one day a year honors good neighbors.
This day of recognition is not to be confused with other forms of “Good Neighbor Days”. Stores proclaim “Good Neighbor Days” to promote sales, a wide range of organizations announce “Good Neighbor Days” to promote their cause, and local municipalities and governments proclaim “Good Neighbor Days” for a variety of reasons.
Rather, this day is to truly recognize and appreciate your good neighbor. Hopefully, one of those good neighbors is you!
History:
In the early 1970’s, Mrs. Becky Mattson from Lakeside, Montana recognized the importance of good neighbors, and started the effort to make this a National day. With the help of congressman Mike Mansfield, she succeed in getting three presidents (Nixon, Ford, and Carter) to issue proclamations, along with numerous governors.
In 2003, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution, sponsored by Montana Senator Max Baucus, making September 28, National Good Neighbor Day. Previously, this day was celebrated on the fourth Sunday of September.
Note: Rhode Island initiated a movement to pass a National Neighbor Day on the Sunday before Memorial Day. Action never materialized into a formal national proclamation or law.
How to Celebrate:
Here are some suggestions for celebrating the day:
- Help your neighbors in some way.
- Offer a smile and friendly hello to your neighbor
- Have your neighbor over for a meal
- Hold a block party
- Get to know your neighbor a little better

Rosh Hashanah is the celebration of the Jewish New Year. In celebrating the New Year, Rosh Hashanah celebrates the creation of the world. It is also one of the holiest days of the Jewish year.
Did you know? Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah are the only Jewish holidays that do not have roots in a historical religious event.
